What Is a Good Typing Speed?

A good typing speed depends on the task, the passage difficulty, and whether accuracy stays high. There is no single number that fits every job.

Everyday computer users often type between 30 and 50 WPM on familiar text. Students and office workers often reach 50 to 70 WPM with regular practice. Professional transcription, programming, and court reporting can demand much higher sustained output, but those roles use specialized practice and often different scoring rules.

Accuracy matters more than the label

Before comparing yourself with a benchmark, check accuracy. A 70 WPM result at 88 percent accuracy is less useful than a 55 WPM result at 97 percent accuracy in most real work.

Set a personal baseline

Take the typing speed test three times and use the middle result as your baseline. Improve by 5 WPM at a time while keeping accuracy stable, then reassess after two weeks of short daily practice.
