How to Improve Typing Speed

Most people can type faster than they think. The difference between a comfortable 40 WPM and a confident 70 WPM is usually a set of repeatable habits, not natural talent.
Set up before you speed up
Sit with your feet flat, keep your wrists straight, and place your elbows at roughly a right angle. The keyboard should sit close enough that your shoulders stay relaxed. Tension travels quickly from shoulders to fingers, so a comfortable setup is the first speed improvement.
Return to the home row
The home row is the resting position: ASDF for the left hand and JKL; for the right hand. Return to it between words instead of letting your hands drift. When your hands start from the same place every time, your brain learns the distance to every key as a fixed pattern.
Type in rhythm, not bursts
Fast typists do not hurry each letter; they type in a steady rhythm. When you hit a difficult word, slow the beat slightly rather than jamming all the letters together. A controlled rhythm keeps accuracy high, and accuracy protects speed from expensive corrections.
Use short drills daily
Short, frequent sessions build muscle memory faster than one long session per week. Use the common words practice for email-ready vocabulary, then check your progress with the 1 minute typing test.
